Matair is a handcrafted vessel with a certified ceramic water filter attached. The simple design consists of two sections; a top lidded piece, which receives the water, and a bottom portion where the filtered water runs through making it a seamless process to refill. The treated water is accessed through a hand casted brass tap. Available in 3 different colors; Matte White, Charcoal Black, and Gloss Red; the Vessel is able to filter and store ( 10 liters of water).

Locally manufactured ceramic filters have traditionally been used throughout the world to treat household water. Studies have shown an adequate removal of bacterial pathogens in water filtered through high quality locally-produced or imported ceramic filters in developing countries. The Nazava filter used for our MATAIR vessel complies with the Indonesian drinking water standard of the ministry of health and World Health Organization standards.

With the Matair Vessel, Makasi and Jenggala hope to introduce a design-conscious, safe and sustainable option of water filtration into homes and commercial establishments.

Further information regarding the effectiveness of ceramic water filtration:

The effectiveness of ceramic filters at removing bacteria, viruses, and protozoa depends on the production quality of the ceramic filter. Most ceramic filters are effective at removing bacteria and the larger protozoans, but not at removing the viruses. A 60-70% reduction in diarrheal disease incidence has been documented in users of these filters. Studies have also shown significant bacterial contamination when poor-quality locally produced filters are used, or when the receptacle is contaminated at the household level. Because there is no chlorine residual protection, it is important that users be trained to properly care for and maintain the ceramic filter and receptacle.
Benefits:
· Proven reduction of bacteria and protozoa in water
· Simplicity of use and acceptability
· Proven reduction of diarrheal disease incidence for users
· Long life if the filter remains unbroken
Caring for the water filter
· Filters must be cleaned regularly (given timeframe?), especially with heavy usage of local tap water.
· Over time spare parts must be replaced (given time frame?)

Please note that the filters are highly effective for reducing bacteria and protozoa but not as effective against viruses.
